The middle of senior year is the perfect time to stop and look at the whole picture.

By January, enough of the year has passed to see what is working, but there is still time to fix problems before graduation.

1. Update the Transcript

Enter completed fall courses and grades. Make sure spring courses are listed correctly as in progress and verify that the student is still on track for your homeschool’s graduation requirements.

2. Check for Missing Credits or Courses

Look at each major subject area and compare the transcript with the student’s post-graduation plans. If a college, scholarship, or program expects a particular course, you still have time to address many gaps.

3. Review College Applications

If your student is college-bound, check the status of every application. Make sure required transcripts, test scores when applicable, recommendations, and supplemental materials were received.

Do not assume an application is complete simply because it was submitted.

4. Follow Up on Financial Aid

If the FAFSA has been submitted, review the FAFSA Submission Summary and respond to any requests from colleges. Track scholarship deadlines and make sure the student is checking email regularly.

5. Check Dual-Enrollment Courses

Confirm spring registration, tuition or fee responsibilities, textbook needs, and the student’s standing in current college courses.

6. Look at Testing

If the student plans another ACT or SAT attempt, register early enough to receive scores before important admission or scholarship deadlines.

7. Start Graduation Logistics

Decide who will issue the diploma, verify the graduate’s legal name, choose the graduation date, and begin thinking about ceremony participation, senior pictures, announcements, and celebrations.

8. Ask the Student What They Need

Senior year can become a list of adult deadlines. Ask the student how they feel about the year, what they are excited about, and what still feels uncertain.

A Simple Midyear Question

At this point, you should be able to answer: If graduation were three months away, what would still need to happen?

Whatever appears on that list deserves your attention now.

January is not a deadline. It is a checkpoint. Use it to catch problems while they are still fixable and to make room for the parts of senior year your family actually wants to enjoy.
