Course Overview
Geography of the Western Hemisphere is an engaging, hands-on course designed for elementary
and middle school students. The class introduces students to the physical and human geography of
North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
Students will explore maps, landforms, cultures, and global connections through a combination of
interactive instruction, creative activities, and age-appropriate research projects. The course nurtures
curiosity, global awareness, and geographical thinking.
Course Goals
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate foundational map skills, including using globes, compasses, and
latitude/longitude.
Identify major regions, countries, landforms, and bodies of water in the Western Hemisphere.
Describe cultural, environmental, and economic diversity across the hemisphere.
Explain how geography influences climate, resources, and human activity.
Conduct simple research and share findings through maps, drawings, writing, or short presentations.
Instructional Approach
This course uses a blend of:
Hands-on learning such as building maps, creating passports, labeling landforms, and exploring cultural artifacts.
Visual and interactive tools including atlases, digital maps, globes, and short educational videos.
Small-group collaboration to encourage discussion, problem-solving, and peer learning.
Creative projects like country profiles, art activities, and heritage connections.
Optional extension activities for families who want to go deeper at home.
